An Unstable Middle East

Here is an interesting article from the Jerusalem Post about Israel's perspective on the current instability in the Middle East : 'We're living on a volcano, experts warn'

Also, a BBC article : 'Analysis: Why Egypt Matters'

  1. And this one allows comments! Whoop.

So, the verse I was probably thinking of was this:

'He shall stretch out his hand against the countries, and the land of Egypt shall not escape. He shall become ruler of the treasure of gold and of silver, and all the precious things of Egypt, and the Libyans and the Cushites shall follow in his train. But news from the east and the north shall alarm him, and he shall go out with great fury to destroy and devote many to destruction. And he shall pitch his palatial tents between the sea and the glorious holy mountain. Yet he shall come to his end, with none to help him.' (Dan 11v42-43)

However, despite countless sessions on the subject, I'm still not sure what Dan 11 is talking about. So not sure whether it applies to the end days or not....

  2. Comments - yeh, figured actually allowing discussion might not be a bad thing :)

Hey, so after you said that, as I really don't know much about it at all, I picked up 'The Book of Daniel: Verse by Verse Exposition' (H.P. Mansfield) which says this:
"Russia will control Egypt, thus dominating the southern Mediterranean seaboard, preventing British influence or protection...." He then gives some reasons why Russia has reasons to act against Egypt, and then refers to Isaiah 19v2-4 as depicting 'an Egypt under "a cruel lord": the Gogian power. It will see the outbreak of civil war (v.2), which breaks the spirit of Egypt (v.3), and leaves the whole nation in the control of powerful, strong and harsh overlords (v.4). Economic and political troubles will be felt throughout the land, as all industry and farming becomes subject to the claims of Russia (vv. 5-10). This circumstance will form part of the humbling process by which Yahweh will prepare Egypt for its place in the Kingdom (v.21-22) under the guidance of the Lord Jesus Christ."
    I wonder if that's what you've heard?
So that's H.P.'s expansion on "and the land of Egypt shall not escape'...haven't spent any time on it at all so I'm in the same boat as you on Dan 11.

  3. Economic & political troubles - tick, civil war - nearly a very big tick ... How very interesting.

Don't see any Russians rubbing their hands together with glee at the opportunity as yet though, guess we'll have to wait and see what happens.

  4. Indeed. It would be interesting to see what happens if the Suez canal gets shut down.

Interesting - from a U.S. perspective - would respond 'diplomatically, economically, militarily'. Wonder what Russia would do.
